Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnobirthing?

A Hypnobirthing course with us is focused on how you FEEL after you have given birth. It doesn't matter if you are having a vaginal or abdominal birth, EVERYONE deserves an empowering experience.

How successful is hypnobirthing?

In a 2015 clinical trial involving 680 women, researchers found that those who self-hypnotised felt less afraid and anxious during labor than they'd expected to. Most also later reported having had positive experiences, saying that hypnosis helped them feel calm, confident and empowered before and during their births

Will I need to attend another antenatal class after yours?

Our Hypnobirthing course is a complete antenatal programme. The live sessions focus on giving birth and shortly after, however we give you access to course extras which includes sessions on yoga, baby wearing and weaning. I have an additional course on breastfeeding which can be purchased alongside the full course.

Is hypnobirthing FREE on the NHS?

NHS trusts have started to appreciate the benefits of hypnobirthing. Swansea Bay health board usually offers hypnobirthing courses to parents-to-be however at the moment they are on hold due to Covid-19. One of the benefits of our courses is that unlike NHS antenatal classes, we run small group classes so that you are able to practise techniques and ask questions. We also offer additional ongoing support which is invaluable.

When should I attend a hypnobirthing course?

Given the choice, I would advise doing the course in the second trimester of your pregnancy so you can enjoy the benefits during your pregnancy as well as at the birth of your baby. It is not so much a matter of learning facts so they are fresh in your mind, but more a matter of absorbing the information so that it becomes second nature, but the Hypnobirthing course I teach works whenever you do it.

I had a traumatic first birth, can hypnobirthing help me?
Many hypnobirthing clients attend courses following a traumatic first birth experience and are able to on to have a positive second birth. If you have had a particularly traumatic birth, it may be useful for you to attend the 3-step Rewind course first.

Do I attend the course alone?
Birth partners don't have to attend the course, but they are more than welcome and encouraged to come if possible. Most birth partners arrive at the course utterly sceptical and leave extremely enthusiastic. The benefits of hypnobirthing on birth partners are vast. The will be knowledgeable and able to support the birthing person as they give birth, which is completely invaluable.

What course materials are provided?
At the start of the course you will be provided with a course workbook, which will be used in sessions and can be used throughout your pregnancy. You will also be given access to an online folder with worksheets, course extra links and MP3's for you to use for up to 6 months after the end of the course. You will also be provided a goodie bag which contains a selection of products that we find may be useful aids to your relaxation.

What happens after the course?

Before the start of your course you will be added to a WhatspApp group and will be given access to the BB Community Facebook page. To get the most out of the course, you need to go home and practice! A practice schedule is discussed on the course. As well as the WhatsApp and Facebook groups, you have my full support after the course and can contact me for support or to ask questions. When your baby arrives, regular meet ups are arranged for you and your families to attend if you wish.

I have a really low pain threshold and am worried hypnobirthing won’t work for me.

A lot of birthing people say this, I was one of them in my first pregnancy. Hypnobirthing is NOT about using no pain relief! In the course that I teach, we talk about ALL options that you have during pregnancy as well as hypnobirthing tools. My course will give you so many tools and techniques to keep you calm and in control at each stage of your labour.

I’m having a planned caesarean birth, can I still use hypnobirthing?
Yes! There are huge benefits to using hypnobirthing with a planned caesarean including staying calm in the run up to your operation, and a faster recovery time. ‘Gentle’ caesareans are discussed within the course but if you wish I can run a private course tailored exactly to your requirements so contact me to discuss how I can help you prepare for your birth.

I’m having twins, can I still use hypnobirthing?

We can spend time discussing the decisions you will have to make about where and how you give birth. Knowing that you have options for how you give birth is often a revelation for some. I will support your birth choices and help you prepare for the birth you want.

I would like to have an epidural, is there any point in doing hypnobirthing?
Using hypnobirthing may mean you get a little further into your labour before you need pain relief, and many find they don't need any at all, but if you decide that you need additional help, the techniques still work really well alongside all the common
methods of pain relief.
